Subject: Top 10 updates From: Chris Williams Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 19:57:53 -0500 (EST) To: mtusysadm@mtu.edu I mentioned at the sys ad council meeting this past week that I has started composing an email to everyone in regards to the Top 10 list... but that I had deleted the message before it was complete, well, I have it back now, so I finished it up and am sending it out. The only items which have been modified in the list below are items 9 and 10... they were the only ones on the list I had not completed prior to last weeks meeting. --------------------------------- I met with the Directors in IT and Jim Cross on 12/11/2002. At the meeting I presented the Top 10 list that the Sys Admin Council had developed. We also, briefly, talked about the previous years list. Below you will find the comments I recorded for each of the Top 10 items on our list. Please read through these and let me know if you have any comments or questions. Chris ---------- 1) Network Statistics - Telcom area - the group is currently working on this - Brenda said she understood the needs - there was no timeline outlined 2) SPAM filtering - DCS area - Spring term completion date - will be available for email.mtu.edu users 3) MeetingMaker Consolidation - DCS area - currently working with the calendar subcommittee of the council in starting this process - will work with departments who want to consolidate under current version - will be ready to consolidate university wide when next major release is out, this will likely be early summer 4) Automation of DNS requests - Telcom area - Brenda had concerns about error checking - will work with Jeff on scripting this - no formal deadline provided 5) Telcom Billing - Telcom area - Brenda commented that she recognizes this is a problem and is actively working on resolving the issues - Brenda said there is a major upgrade of the telemanagement software this Christmas break and after that she will be able to provide better timelines and more information 6) Active Directory to LDAP Authentication - DCS area - Dan talked about a product call MetaMerge - Dan commented that security is a primary concern - AD in departments will have to be secure and all transmission encrypted - NOTE: I do not have a timeline next to this item, I will talk with Dan about a proposed timeline and get back to everyone 7) Firewalls at Desktops - Telcom and Security(DCS) areas - would like to get started on the development of policy - need to start discussions about how to make this happen - NOTE: the council needs to form an ad-hoc subcommittee to get started on this - Brenda asked for more detail about off campus companies needing access as a result of outsourcing 8) Network Monitoring - Telcom area - looking at implementing Big Brother service - NOTE: correcting communication mechanism is being worked on by the Emergency Notification ad-hoc subcommittee of the Sys Ad Council 9) NIS <-> LDAP Synchronization - DCS area - possible LDAP gateway solution 10) Virus Scanning - DCS area - done
