What's a PPD and where do I get one?

A PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file describes the capabilities of your printer. Your Macintosh uses the contents of the PPD to know what options are valid for that printer. papd needs a PPD so that it can supply capability information to your Macintosh when it requests it--so it looks more like a real printer.

The location of the PPD for each printer is specified in papd.conf. As of May 1, 1998, you can get PPDs for many printers at Adobe's web site at:

http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/LIBRARY/pdrvmac.htm

One trick: the PPDs files should be Unix text files for papd to read them properly. Don't worry, the data will get back to the Mac fine.
